Planning Objections to Student Housing in Preston
23rd August 2011: The town of Preston, just outside Manchester, is the latest to raise objections to plans for new student accommodation. A planning application for a new five storey block of flats which will be used as international student accommodation has been submitted by housing developers, but residents say it will "dwarf" surrounding properties.
Locals have a long list of grievances with the plans (which are currently being looked at by Preston Council), including the lack of parking spaces, the height of the building and the extra traffic it would create. However, as with many cities in the UK, Preston, which is close to some of the top business universities in the UK, is in desperate need for more student accommodation. The nearby Manchester is suffering a similar problem, where there are far more students than there are Manchester student homes.
Success for Student Accommodation Developer
24th August 2011: Student housing developer Unite are going from strength to strength as their private halls continue to be snapped up. The company, who specialise in accommodation for international students, today announced record profits as well as grand new plans for student accommodation in London.
Planning has been accepted for 563 new beds in London, which would take Unite's total number in the capital to 1,904 spaces for students from top London universities as well as the numerous colleges in London. What's more, they also have plans in the pipeline for a huge new accommodation site in London which would house 1,200 students, as well as a 477 bed development in Glasgow.
