Studying in the UK as an international student can be expensive when you add up course fees, accommodation costs and living expenses. If you want to study in the UK but do not have enough money to cover the cost of your course, don't worry, there are a number of ways in which you can get help. Here you can find the basics of where to look for financial assistance through scholarships, or alternatively you can search our directory of student essay competitions currently running which can offer large cash prizes.

Where can I Apply for Scholarships at UK Universities?

Many UK universities have a number of scholarships specifically designed for international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. These are generally based on academic merit, but are also often means tested. However, there are usually very few scholarships compared to the number of international students, which means there is very strong competition for them.

Your country may also have student grants or special Career Development Loans which enable you to study internationally. To find out if your country offers these grants and loans it is best to check with your school advisor or careers counsellor in your home country.

There are also a number on national and international organisations that offer international students scholarships to study in the UK. The British Council is the most famous of these, though as shown below, there are other less well known scholarships too.

 

How do I Apply for Scholarships?

To apply for scholarships at specific universities that you are interested in studying at, it is best to look at the finance sections of their websites. You should also speak to the course administrator to see if there are any scholarships specific for your course. You can find more information about the scholarships at the most popular universities for international students in our directory of top UK universities.

To find out how to apply for scholarships from the British Council, contact your local British Council office, as the UK office does not keep application forms. You need to start researching it 18 months before you want to start studying, because the application process begins more than one academic year before the start of the course. A-Z Undergraduate Scholarship Directory

For international students applying to undergraduate courses, there are a number of well known scholarship programmes specifically for you:

  • Adzuna's Student of the Year: Is open to undergraduate and graduates in 12 countries around the world. The award includes a £3,500 prize as well as career coaching and and a work placement to help winners get the best start in their career. This is open to students in any subject or facult, and is awarded annually.
  • Africa Educational Trust: Various scholarships that may be limited to specific geographic areas on specific subjects.
  • All Saints Educational Trust: Personal grant awards to teachers and future teachers and students in Religious Studies, Home Economics and related areas. Corporate awards are made for imaginative new projects which will enhance the Church's contribution to higher and further education.
  • Apple WWDC Student Scholarship Program: This program provides selected students with the opportunity to receive a free ticket to the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Full or part-time students who are either an iOS Developer University Program member, Mac Developer Program member, or ADC Student member are eligible. Don't miss your chance to work with and meet the Apple engineers responsible for the powerful technologies in iOS and Mac OS X.
  • BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance Tertiary Scholarships: BMA offers scholarships to students who are current tertiary students. Applicants must be enrolled to study full time undergraduate degree courses in one of the categories related to mining, at any Queensland University, New South Wales University or University of Adelaide.
  • BP Scholarships: The Internship scholarship for undergraduates and the Opportunity Award for postgraduates are offered to students attending or applying to the following universities: Imperial College of London, University of Birmingham, University of Cambridge, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, University of Oxford, or University of Strathclyde. 
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Scholarship opportunities for undergraduate study in the United Kingdom for citizens of the Falkland Islands, the Maldives, St. Helena and the Seychelles.
  • Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme: This scheme is from the same organisation but is specifically designed for students from developing Commonwealth countries who want to study in the UK but cannot afford to.
  • ExpatYouth Scholarship: Clements International's Expat Youth Scholarship is a unique contest exclusively for expat students who spend their childhoods moving between different countries and cultures.
  • Facebook Grace Hopper Women in Computing Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding female Computer Science university students to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. Students should be enrolled full-time at a university anywhere in the world and be pursuing a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical major.
  • GE Foundation Scholar-LeadersProgram: Students in their first or second year of study in Engineering, Technology, Business, Finance, Management or Economics, who are attending a participating university, can qualify. Regional requirements apply, as this scholarship is open to students from Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Poland, Romania, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a financial award for the academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership.
  • ICO Foundation: Various scholarships in the fields of museography and Asia-Pacific studies. Some scholarships are only available to Spanish citizens or foreign citizens with residence in Spain.
  • J. W. Saxe Memorial Fund: A prize of two thousand dollars will be awarded to one or more undergraduate or postgraduate students involved in public service. The award is meant to enable the student to gain practical experience in public service by taking a no-pay or low-pay job or internship during a summer or other term. Preference will be given applicants who have already found such a position, but who require additional funds. 
  • Kodak Scholarship Program: These highly competitive awards are given to full-time undergraduate or graduate students demonstrating superior professional filmmaking production skills and creativity along with academic success. Participating worldwide colleges and universities that offer a degree or diploma program in film, film production, or cinematography may nominate up to two students each year for consideration.   • Microsoft Scholarship: This scholarship is for students enrolled full time in a Bachelor's degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico who are making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics. A 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0 is required.
  • Mohamedali Karimjee Trust: Grants to African students for study in the UK. Contact: Karimjee Jivanjee & Co UK, 21 Whitefriars Street, London EC4Y 8JJ.
  • Oh, the Places You'll Go! College Scholarship: One $10,000 scholarship award will be made by Random House, Inc. and the Dr. Seuss Estate to the applicant's choice of post-secondary educational institution. Applicants must be 12th-grade high school students graduating int he spring, age 21 years or under.
  • S. H. A. Ziauddin Trust: Awards for up to £500 are available to anyone studying, or wishing to study, on courses in science, agriculture or environmental protection, and willing to use their skills for the benefit of the peoples of the Indian sub-continent (i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) will be considered at all times of the year. Applicants should write giving brief details about themselves, their course and their future plans. If appropriate, and application form and explanatory letter will be sent to them in response to which they can give further details.   • Sir Charles Bright Scholarship: The Scholarships are awarded to disabled persons undertaking post secondary education, whether at University, TAFE or other recognised educational institutions.
  • Wingate Scholarships: Wingate Scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value and to musicians for advanced training. They must be citizens of the UK, the Commonwealth, Israel or Ireland, or citizens of Council of Europe member countries (provided they have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years).

  • The Ahmad Mustafa Abu-Hakima Bursary: Recipients must use the award towards a full-time Masters programme that includes studying the history of the modern Arab world. Applicants must possess a good honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent institution recognised by SOAS. Open to UK/EU and Overseas applicants
  • Alban Scholarship Award: Scholarships for nationals of 18 eligible Latin American countries to study a postgraduate program in Europe.
  • All Saints Educational Trust: The All Saints Educational Trust makes personal grant awards to teachers, intending teachers and students in Religious Studies, Home Economics and related areas.   • Blakemore Foundation: 1 yr. language study abroad for graduates using Asian languages in their careers.
  • The British Academy: The British Academy offers grants for post-doctoral research in the humanities and the social sciences.
  • Booz & Company Award Programme for Women in Europe: Any female enrolled at London Business School who has a strong interest in working in one of Booz & Company's European offices for the summer. Applicants must be fluent in English as well as in the language of the preferred office.
  • British Chevening Scholarships: Scholarships are given to students from all over the world and either fully or partly pay for international students studying postgraduate degrees in the UK for a year. It is aimed at students with great potential to become future leaders in their profession.
  • British Federation of Women Graduates : Scholarships for women in their third year of doctoral studies or part-time students at an equivalent stage of studies who are registered at a university in England, Wales or Scotland (not Northern Ireland).
  • CASTME Scholarship: There is one general scholarship, ie. students from any Commonwealth country may apply, and two others for students from Mauritius and Antigua. Candidates will need to show how this award will enable them to enhance the teaching of Science, Technology or Mathematics in their home country.
  • Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP): Scholarships are awarded to citizens of Commonwealth countries and pay for travel, fees and living expenses for postgraduate students for one to three years. The scheme is aimed at students who are expected to make an important contribution to their home country after studying in the UK.
  • Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme: This scheme is from the same organisation but is specifically designed for students from developing Commonwealth countries who want to study in the UK but cannot afford to.
  • CV Starr Scholarship: The scholarship is available for a one year taught masters programme in any subject. Applicants need to be nationals of Burma, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Dale Fridell Scholarships: The scholarship is open to anyone currently attending or aspiring to attend a university, college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary education program in the 2010-11 academic year. The scholarship is awarded four times annually.
  • Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED) Scholarship: Scholarships for students who plan to undertake studies at the Masters level in areas directly related to sustainable energy development. Recipients must be citizens of the developing countries and territories identified for OECD official development aid.
  • ESSKA Scholarship: The ESSKA Scholarship programme is reserved for young colleagues who strongly wish to enlarge and improve their knowledge and competencies in orthopaedic sports medicine, knee surgery and arthroscopy. The scholarship allows the scholars to visit highly qualified teaching surgeons and recognized sports medicine centres in Western Europe for several weeks.
  • Faculty for the Future Fellowships : Grants for women who are citizens of developing countries for a PhD degree or Post-doctoral research in the physical sciences or related disciplines.
  • The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program: Scholarships for advanced study awarded to exceptional individuals that must be resident nationals or residents of Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam.

  • Samsung Electronics Global Scholarship: The scholarship is offered to all final year undergraduates in areas of Business studies, Languages, Economics to pursue a MBA Degree at the Graduate School of Business, Sung Kyun Kwan (SKK) University - a newly established business school in collaboration with Samsung Group and MIT Sloan School of Management in Seoul. Scholars will have to sign a four year contract to work in Samsung Electronics (two years in HQ, Korea and two years at the regional headquarters/overseas subsidiary) upon completion of the Master Program.   • Windle Trust International: Postgraduate sponsorship of refugees and internally displaced people from the Horn and East Africa at universities in the UK.
  • Wingate Scholarships: Wingate Scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake creative or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value and to musicians for advanced training. Applicants need to be at least 24. They must be citizens of the UK, the Commonwealth, Israel or Ireland, or citizens of Council of Europe member countries (provided they have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years).
  • Zonta International: The Fellowships are granted annually to women pursuing graduate Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering.

  • CASTME Scholarship: There is one general scholarship, ie. students from any Commonwealth country may apply, and two others for students from Mauritius and Antigua. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how the skills and knowledge they will gain from the course will further CASTME's aims and the millennium development goals. Candidates will need to show how this award will enable them to enhance the teaching of Science, Technology or Mathematics in their home country. The successful candidate will be required to return home immediately on completion of their degree.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships: Scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries to study in the UK.

Argentina

  • Kodak Scholarship Program: These highly competitive awards are given to full-time undergraduate or graduate students demonstrating superior professional filmmaking production skills and creativity along with academic success. Participating worldwide colleges and universities that offer a degree or diploma program in film, film production, or cinematography may nominate up to two students each year for consideration.
  • Santander Scholarships: Nine Santander Scholarships with a value of £5,000 each are available for 2011 entry for applicants from the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela and the UK.

Australia

  • Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW): Scholarships for women graduates who are members of AFUW or its international affiliates.
  • The General Sir Monash Awards: Scholarships for outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the world’s best Universities, appropriate to their field of study.
  • The Joint Academic Scholarship On-line Network (JASON): A search engine that contains information about postgraduate scholarships. The scholarships in the database apply to Australian students wishing to study at home or abroad, and to international students wishing to study in Australia.
  • Kodak Scholarship Program: These highly competitive awards are given to full-time undergraduate or graduate students demonstrating superior professional filmmaking production skills and creativity along with academic success.   • Fundación Caixa Galicia: Scholarships are granted to the Spanish participants admitted to postgraduate programmes. They consist of tuition fees, a stipend of US$1,350 per month, contribution towards transport costs to and from Fontainebleau and medical insurance.   • Fundación Caja Madrid: This foundation offers scholarships for postgraduate studies in Europe and the United States.
  • Fundación Pedro Barrié De La Maza: Various scholarships for Spanish citizens.
  • La Fundación Ramón Areces: Scholarships are offered in December, the closing application date is 1st March.

  • The Glory Foundation: A charity that helps underprivileged people in London. Their funding is aimed at UK students pursuing higher education but who lack the finances to achieve it.

  • Jack Kent Cooke Foundation: Various scholarships to help young people of exceptional promise achieve their educational goals. All students have to prove that they have a financial need when applying, and they must plan to study in the U.S. or hold a degree from a U.S. institution.

  • The Ransome Scholarship: For students from North America who will be studying at St Andrews for four years. There is one undergraduate scholarship covering full tuition fees for each year of study, full accommodation fees for each year of study in University accommodation (or comparable fees towards private costs), a fixed travel allowance and a book allowance for a four year degree.
  • USA-UK Fulbright Scholarship: Candidates must be US citizens; have received (normally within the last five years) or expect to receive a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.5; demonstrate evidence of leadership qualities.

Student Loans and Other Alternatives

The examples above are certainly not the only ways for international students to get scholarships. Every foreign student is in a different situation when applying to study in the UK, and your nationality, course and university can all make a difference to which scholarships you should apply for. The best way to find a scholarship that is right for you is to spend alot of time researching on the Internet and talking to the student advisor at your school and course administrator at the university you hope to study at.

Remember that international students usually cannot claim welfare benefits, but some students may be able to get a student loan in the UK. Visit the UKCISA website to find out if you are eligible.
