London Olympics 2012

For two weeks during the summer of 2012 all eyes around the world were on London. From the 27th July to the 12th August, the UK hosted the biggest sporting event in the world- the London Olympics 2012.

In July 2005 it was announced that London had defeated Moscow, New York, Madrid and Paris to be the host city of the Summer Olympic Games for the third time. After that, the UK spent seven years gearing up for the thousands of athletes and millions of visitors that arrived for the Games. All in all, there was 26 Olympic Sports and 20 Paralympic Sports, across 37 competition venues, with 14,700 athletes and 21,000 media and broadcasters.

Whilst the main focus was in Stratford in East London, events were held throughout the country, and transport, venues and accommodation all needed to be developed or built from scratch. Everything was being done on an absolutely epic scale.

All the years of planning were worth it in the end, as the whole Olympics worked almost perfectly. There were world records broken, amazing sporting stories, Team GB got a record medal haul, and the organisation was roundly praised.
