Shortage of Student Accommodation in London
20th July 2011: An annual survey of accommodation for international students and home students in London has revealed that the number of new rooms being created has almost doubled, with more than 7,700 bedspaces in progress in the capital. However, despite this huge increase, the gap between number of students and amount of accommodation is still widening, with student numbers increasing by 6% on last year, to 283,500.
Andrew Gale, planning director of the company that organized the survey, revealed that:
"In Southwark, Islington and Camden policymakers have adopted quite stringent policies to limit new student accommodation in their boroughs. We expect restrictive policies in central London to impact the pipeline in other boroughs. In particular, we will be watching Brent, Ealing, Greenwich, Hackney, Haringey and Newham over the next 12 months."
The student living in London has to accommodate students from a huge number of institutions, including business schools such as London Business School and Cass, colleges such as Westminster Kingsway, English language schools such as London School of English and International House, and of course universities such as Imperial College London, University College London (UCL) and London School of Economics (LSE).
