And the Christmas Number One Is…?

With Christmas just five days away now, no one is bothered about buying presents, putting up decorations or buying food. Instead the question on everyone's mind is ‘who is going to be UK Christmas Number 1?'

In the UK the song that is top of the singles chart on Christmas Day takes the coveted Christmas Number 1 title. Here we take you through the possible contenders this year, with the usual mix of reality show winners, novelty acts and tearjerkers:

Military Wives Choir- Wherever You Are

This choir is unique in the fact that it is made up of only women whose husbands are in the military. It was put together by conductor Gareth Malone as part of a BBC TV show, and this is their first single.

The lyrics are inspired by letters to and from their soldier husbands, and this group of regular women from Devon are now huge favourites to be 2011 Christmas Number 1.

Lou Monte- Dominik the Donkey

Dominik the Donkey was originally released in 1960 by novelty artist Lou Monte...and no one ever heard it. However, for the last five years, the hugely popular Chris Moyles Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1 has been playing it and it is now set to challenge for Christmas Number 1.

With lyrics about a Christmas donkey, this is definitely the novelty entry for the year.

Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Sprit

Every year there is a public campaign to get a song that is actually good to top the charts at Christmas. Two years ago Rage Against the Machine's ‘Killing In The Name Of' defied all odds to claim the top spot.

The same people behind that campaign have chosen the classic Nirvana song this time around, to mark twenty years since it was first released. Driven by Facebook and Twitter, you certainly can't write them off succeeding again.

Little Mix- Cannonball

For the last six years, it has been almost compulsory for that year's X-Factor winner to claim the Christmas Number 1 spot. Indeed, five of the last six acts have been from the reality show.

However, after 2009's failure, it looks like this year is going to follow suit and newly crowned winners Little Mix are expected to miss out with their debut single ‘Cannonball'. Although it is currently number 1, that is likely to change when the Christmas charts are revealed on Sunday.
