British Sport Goes Heavyweight

Two giants of British sport will hopefully both be reaching the pinnacle of their careers this weekend as UK sport comes to the attention of the world. At Wimbledon Andy Murray is playing in the semi-finals today, whilst on Saturday night, boxer David Haye will be taking part in the biggest heavyweight fight of the decade.

Murray Mania

First up is men's semi-finals day at Wimbledon which starts at 1pm this afternoon. The single British hope Andy Murray is playing Rafael Nadal in the second match on Centre Court in a repeat of last year's semi-final. Nadal comfortably won last year and looks to be in good form again this year, but Murray is in a confident mood:

"I know I'll have to run and run, I know it will be physically and mentally tough, but I also know I can win."

If he manages to pull of a surprise and beat the world number 1, then Murray will be able to look forward to playing in the Wimbledon Final on Sunday against the winner of the other semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Wilfred Tsonga.

However, before that, we have the Women's Final to look forward to on the Saturday, when Sharapova of Russia takes on Kvitova from the Czech Republic. What's more, all the semi-finals and finals are being shown in 3D for the first time ever! Selected pubs and cinemas will be showing all the matches on special screens, so why not pop on a pair of glasses and head to your local pub to experience a little bit of three dimensional history.

The Big Fight

In amongst all the tennis, is one of the biggest boxing fights in recent years, as Brit David Haye takes on Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday night. Between them, they have five of the six main heavyweight belts and the winner will be taking all. The fight has been coming for years, as both fighters have struggled to put together a deal until recently. That has meant years of ‘trash talk' from both men, adding an extra spice to the match.

The result is too close to call, but what can be guaranteed is that it will be an explosive battle. It is being held in Hamburg but is being shown on Sky TV in the UK, so if you want to see what is sure to be high entertainment, head to your nearest pub at around 10pm on Saturday.

Hopefully, on Monday we will be writing a similar blog post describing the triumphant victories of two of Britain's most famous athletes in one historic weekend...though chances are it will be more of a bitter dismissal of their defeats!
