The Football Season Gathers Pace

Foreign Students's picture

This weekend saw the latest round of football fixtures for the FA Cup in England. It brought the normal mixture of upsets (or ‘Cupsets' if you like that sort of thing), giant killings and rivalries, cutting the competition from 32 teams, to just 20 still standing. The competition that each year goes against all football betting hasn't disappointed this year.

The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world and is very much a part of English history and culture. A huge range of teams are allowed to enter, meaning everyone from the best in the country to local amateur sides have a chance to enjoy the ‘magic of the cup' (a favourite phrase of football commentators and journalists).

This year, some of the country's most successful teams have been drawn against each other, meaning that whilst Manchester United and Manchester City (who won it last year- above) are both out, teams like Crawley and Stevenage are going strong.

A Busy Six Months

This weekend's fixtures marked the start of a very busy six months in the footballing world. In the Premier League, it is starting to become clearer which teams will finish where. At the top, it looks likely that the title will be heading to Manchester, but as for which team in the city will be lifting the trophy in May, it is anyone's guess. Similarly, it looks like the battle between Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool for third and fourth spot is also likely to go down to the wire. If you are interested in a bit of football betting, then the bookies have Man City as favourites to win the title.

Away from the domestic league, the Champions League is beginning to hot up, with the knock-out phases starting in two weeks. With the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich still involved, England's representatives (Arsenal and Chelsea) are likely to find it pretty tough to go all the way to the final in Munich.

Euro 2012 Preparations

Whilst club football is holding everyone's attention at the moment, Europe is gearing up for international football to take centre stage this summer at Euro 2012. The tournament is held every four years and is the second most prestigious prize for European teams, after the World Cup. This year it is being held in Poland and Ukraine, and teams throughout the continent are deep in preparation.

An important part of preparing for an international tournament is the Friendlies held in the months prior to it. With that in mind, England have a vital game against Holland lined up for the end of February. The match is being held at the world-famous Wembley, though England are likely to face a tough challenge against the 2010 World Cup runners-up.
