Party at Stonehenge!

Thousands of revellers gathered at Stonehenge this morning to celebrate the longest day of the year. As part of an ancient tradition, 18,000 druids, hippies, pagans and tourists all travelled to the historic site to witness the sunrise at 4.43am that marked the official start of summer in the UK.

Called the summer solstice, the 21st June has been a sacred highlight in the Pagan calendar for thousands of years, as druids have gathered to worship the sun. Stonehenge has always been at the centre of the festivities due to its ancient origins and connections to paganism. Druids still turn out every year and were led in ceremony last night by their chief Arhtur Pendragon.

Unique Party

However, these days, the majority of the revellers are there simply to enjoy themselves at an all night party at one of Britain's most recognizable landmarks. Stonehenge has been roped off from visitors since 1978, and the solstice is one of the few times each year where the public are allowed access to inside the stone circle.

In true British style, this has meant that the celebrations in recent years have more resembled a banging party than an ancient religious ceremony. Together, the two group of people always seem to get along fine and work together to create a unique clash of tradition and modernity.
