The Multiple Personalities of the Great Gatsby

As part of our build-up to the 2014 Oscars, we are looking at the films likely to take home some of the top awards. Here, Erik Redli examines the parallels seen in The Great Gatsby with other leading characters in film and television.

The Great Gatsby starts with a black and white Warner Brothers logo just like it would have in the 1920s. I was curious; another tragic story starring DiCaprio.

The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man who has just moved into a small house right next to Gatsby's castle. Ambitious and reverent, he is often a timeless witness to the caprice of the upper classes and eventually he runs away from what he initially pursued.

The mysterious Gatsby does not appear during the first 30 minutes of the movie. Instead the other characters recall his parties and charm, intensifying the expectations of both Nick and the audience. All of a sudden, he appears from the cover of a crowd dancing to the modern soundtrack of Fergie's Little Party Killed Nobody.

Stars Descend on London for 2014 BAFTAs

The 2014 BAFTAs took place in London on Sunday, with the usual mix of A-list celebs, surprise winners, awkward speeches and deserved recognition.

12 Years a Slave took home best film and male lead Chiwetel Ejiofor claimed best actor, and yet there was still the sense that the film was a little hard done by. In many critics' opinion (mine included) it is far and away the best piece of cinema not just of this year, but of many previous years too.

Film Review: Fast & Furious 6 & The Great Gatsby

Last month has flown by; May has been hectic with the end of my first university year abroad. I was meant to make the most out of my stay but the weather has forced me to stay in!

I was watching the news the other day on a French TV channel and the reporter claimed that cinemas have made huge profits recently due to the poor weather. This is most likely to be true, as I have been going cinema quite often and I have couple of reviews for you here. First and my favourite as well:

Fast & Furious 6

The movie is definitely a must-see, with humour and terrific action scenes. Even though the ending was a bit long with the world’s longest take off, the movie remains great.

I have been surprised by how great the movie was (well to my opinion at least) although it contains a bit of drama as it is a classic, typical action movie with fight scenes, explosions, and car races…

It is a great action film that offers an adrenaline rush and breathtaking scenes. I recommend it warmly.

7 Best Blockbuster Movies of 2013 - With Trailers

June is here, the sun is out and the arty cinema of Cannes is over. All that means one thing- the season of the blockbuster movie is just about to hit cinemas.

Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness may have whetted your appetite, but there are PLENTY more big hitting films coming out this summer. 2013 more than any other year appears to offer a feast of stunning looking sci-fi and fantasy films.

With big special effects and even bigger budgets, these are the sort of films that demand to be seen at the cinema. The plot may not always make sense, the characters are often pretty shallow and the acting isn't always that great, but they are sure to be spectacular. Plus, they always make for the best trailers.

Here we round up seven of the very biggest and best blockbusters coming out over the next six months (in order of release date).
