Who Tops the 2014 UK University Rankings?
The Guardian released its annual university rankings yesterday, with Cambridge (above) taking the coveted top spot for the third year in a row. Alongside the overall university rankings, the newspaper uniquely also creates individual subject tables, allowing you to find the best universities for your chosen course- which you can search here.
Universities are measured on nine different criteria, including course satisfaction, teaching quality, staff-student ratio, the amount of money spent on each student, value-added and the percentage of graduates who have a job within 6 months of leaving.
Cambridge narrowly beat its great rival Oxford to first place, with London's LSE claiming third. Away from the traditionally high ranking institutions, Surrey University makes its first appearance in the top 10, whilst Birmingham climbed 15 places to 15th in the UK. Slightly lower down, both Northampton (47th from 86th) and Portsmouth (48th from 78th) enjoyed very impressive jumps up the rankings.
However, there is not such good news for everyone. The biggest fall of any university was seen by Cardiff Met, which fell 39 places to105th in the table, thanks mainly to student satisfaction dropping dramatically.
